End of Classes Celebration


Please join the Deans and the Student Bar Association for an end-of-classes celebration on Monday, April 26th at 5:30 p.m. To mark the last day of classes, the Deans and the SBA will be providing food and drinks; all are welcome to attend. During this party the 2010 Professor of the Year will be announced at 6:00 p.m. and the 3L class will take their hat toss photograph immediately afterwards. To book end the year, Dean Rosato will be playing DJ and will kick off some dancing following the Professor of the Year award presentation. SEE YOU THERE!

Summer Research Assistant Opening


Assistant Professor Christopher T. Hines, who will be joining the faculty of the College of Law this coming June, seeks a research assistant for the 2010-2011 term. Students who have taken Agency and Unincorporated Business Associations, Corporations, Securities Regulation and/or Professional Responsibility, or have comparable experience in private practice, are desired.  Familiarity with office software applications, such as Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel, is a plus.  The research assistant will work with Professor Hines on his ongoing scholarly interests, which include such areas as comparative law, comparative corporate governance, corporate law and professional ethics.  Interested students are encouraged to send a cover letter setting forth their relevant experience and interests, as well as a current resume, transcript, and writing sample to christopher.t.hines@gmail.com by June 15, 2010.

BLSA/LLSA Bar Talk


On Tuesday, April 20th at 3:00 p.m. the Black Law Students Association and the Latino/a Law LLSA Students Association will be hosting a “Bar Talk” in the Marshall Gallery. Craig Boston (Class of ’09) will be returning to share his experience and tips on passing the bar exam. While this event is geared towards graduating 3Ls, all are welcome to attend! ELS Earth Day Activities


In honor of Earth Day, April 22, 2010, the Environmental Law Society will be having a battery and cell phone collection drive next week. There will be boxes around the law school for collection. The batteries will be safely recycled and the cell phones will be donated to Cellphones for Soldiers. ELS will also be having a bake sale on Thursday & Friday.  Lastly, don’t forget about the Environmental Law Society Book Sale: Buy and sell your

Dr. Graeme Lockwood Lecture & Reception


ALL STUDENTS: Dr. Graeme Lockwood will be a guest speaker on Tuesday, April 13 at 3:30 p.m. in the Riley Courtroom. His presentation, “Aspects of U.K. Employment and Social Welfare Law,” will deal with matters of workplace discrimination, human resource administration and contract law specific to the United Kingdom. It will explore themes pertaining to Dr. Lockwood’s collaboration with Professor Lorraine Schmall on a comparative study of U.S.-U.K. legal regimes prohibiting disability discrimination. A reception will follow in the Marshall Gallery.

CLS Meeting


The Christian Legal Society will meet Wednesday, April 14, at noon in Room #187.  Jeff Ammons will lead the bible study on the book of Job and its applications to the legal profession. All are welcome.

RELS Elections


The Real Estate Law Society will be holding elections for the 2010-2011 academic year on Wednesday, April 14th at noon in Room #155.

SELS Guest Speaker


The Sports & Entertainment Law Society will host Christian Spears, the Senior Associate Athletics Director of Administration at NIU, to speak about careers in sports law and collegiate athletics. The event will take place on Wednesday, April 14th in the Riley Courtroom at 12:15 p.m.

Race NIjUdicata Registration

Attention all students, faculty and alumni:  the first great race of the summer is fast approaching!  Race NIjUdicata, the NIU College of Law's first annual 5K Run/Walk and BBQ, is coming up Saturday, April 24, starting outside Swen Parson Hall.  There are still spots available to run, and we need lots of volunteers to help out with the event, so we are bringing registration to you!  Tables will be set up in the Marshall Gallery from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the following days over the next two weeks:
Tuesday, April 6 - Thursday, April 8
Monday, April 12 - Thursday, April 15
We will have all the necessary forms at the table; all you have to do is fill them out and bring your registration fees.  Remember: sign up as a team and save - registration is only $15 per person for teams of five or more, and there are special prizes for any team who can beat the Dean's Team's time.  And don't forget the post-race BBQ provided by Inboden's for everyone, including runners and volunteers.  Hope to see you there!

Reminder: Legal Clinic Summer Clerk Applications


The NIU College of Law Zeke Giorgi Legal Clinic located in Rockford seeks to hire two summer law clerks. Law clerks work 30 hours per week for ten weeks at a commensurate hourly rate.  Law clerks must be eligible for their 711 student practice license. An interest in public interest law is preferred. Starting date is approximately June 1, 2010.  The Clinic represents persons of limited means primarily in the areas of Elder Law, Domestic Abuse, Mediation, and Criminal Defense. Students will be expected to provide direct representation to clients and appear in court under the direct supervision of Clinic attorneys.  Successful applicants also will be expected to work on projects designed to further clinical programs and enhance community relations.  Please send cover letter and resume to Paul Cain, Managing Attorney, at pcain@niu.edu, or to Professor David Taylor at his office (192A) or at dtaylor@niu.edu.
