Moot Court Team at recent competitions


The NIU Moot Court Team faced Southern Methodist University in the first preliminary round, and the School of Excellence in Law (India-enrollment of 2 million students) in the second preliminary round. We advanced to the Octofinal Round, to face Stetson (defending champions).  Watch for the results to be posted!!

PAD Giving Tree


It's that time of year again! As we approach finals, many others are concerned with the upcoming holidays. Each year, Phi Alpha Delta has coordinated a "Giving Tree" with Hope Haven, a homeless shelter here in DeKalb. The Hope Haven Giving Tree project enables each and everyone of us to help the holidays be a better time for those in need. Please stop by the Giving Tree table in the Marshall Gallery this coming week and help a child in need enjoy this holiday season. We have wish lists from 17 needy families, come help those families this holiday season!

Bar Loans for December Graduates


If you are planning on graduating in December and taking the February bar, bar loan applications are available online. Bar study loans are specifically designed for law students who are about to take the bar exam. They assist with bar application costs and living expenses during that period. Check with your current student loan lender or other lenders to get the best interest rate for this type of private loan. Bar study loans cannot be consolidated with other law school student loans.

The Bar Study Loan Application and Promissory Note must be certified by the University Student Financial Aid Office prior to graduation. Complete and sign the application and bring it to the University Student Financial Aid Office for certification.

PILS Fall Raffle

The PILS Fall Raffle will take place on Thursday, November 11th at 4:00 p.m. in the Marshall Gallery. We have a number of secondary prizes this year, including gift baskets, gift cards for a massage and Sweet Dream cupcakes, and Starbucks coffee. Our grand prizes this year are a 42" Vizio LCD TV and a 16 GB Apple iPad! Tickets are now on sale at $5 a piece or 5 for $20. All proceeds go towards the PILS Outreach Assistantship fund, which provides financial support to students who take public interest legal positions over the summer.

Shining the Light on Domestic Violence event reminder


October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. For the past several years, the Zeke Giorgi Clinic and the 17th Judicial Circuit Court Family Violence Coordinating Council have hosted a vigil marking the close of a month of awareness activities. This year, “Shining the Light on Domestic Violence” will again be held at the Clinic (319 W. State St., Rockford, IL) on October 26, 2010 at 5:30 p.m. This brief ceremony will recognize those affected by all forms of Domestic Violence–partner abuse, elder abuse, neglect, financial exploitation, teen dating
violence, and child abuse and neglect. We would welcome your assistance in raising awareness about the problem of domestic violence by joining us at the Clinic on the 26th as we close out Domestic Violence Awareness Month with this ceremony.

SALDF Professor Costume Meet & Greet


The Professor Animal Costume Meet and Greet will be held Wednesday, October 27th from 3:30pm-4:30pm in the Marshall Gallery. Come and take pictures with the winning professor in their Animal Halloween Costume! There will also be Halloween treats and activities.
Donations can be made until Monday, in the faculty secretary’s office, or in the Marshall Gallery from 11am-1pm. The Animal Legal Defense Fund is a great cause and if you donate $5 you are entered into a raffle to win a Halloween bucket filled with candy and home baked goodies! StreetLaw will be holding elections for the following positions: Secretary and 1L Representatives (1 per section). On Thursday, October 28th at 2:30 p.m. in room #188 the Environmental Law Society will sponsor environmental attorney Michael Blazer. Do you want a career in environmental law? Have you ever wondered what environmental lawyers even do? Mr. Blazer is a partner in the environmental law firm Jeep and Blazer, L.L.C., where he manages litigation. He has worked on a wide array of environmental litigation for public and private clients. He will be talking about some of his litigation experiences. Refreshments will be served.

Chicago LL.M. Program Fair & Panel Reminder


On Friday, October 29, DePaul University College of Law is hosting the Chicago LL.M. Program Fair & Panel at the DePaul Center from 3:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. The program is free of charge and will be particularly informative for current JD students and law school alumni who may be interested in the benefits of an LL.M. degree.

It will begin with a panel discussion at 3:30 p.m. and will be immediately followed with an LL.M. program fair from 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Admissions representatives from over 30 LL.M. programs from across the country, include DePaul, Chicago-Kent, Loyola, John Marshall and Northwestern, will attend the fair. Some fair attendees and all LL.M. panelists are currently employed attorneys, which will give law students an excellent opportunity to learn more about the benefits of possessing an LL.M. degree in the legal profession and academia.

The program will also provide attendees with an excellent opportunity to meet other law students and attorneys. The program will take place on the 11th floor DePaul Center, 1 East Jackson Boulevard. LiveHelp Needs Volunteers


Illinois Legal Aid Online is seeking law student volunteers for its exciting "LiveHelp" program. There is
going to be a training for at DePaul University College of Law next Wednesday (Oct 20th) from 4-6 p.m.
that NIU students would be more than welcome to attend. LiveHelp is an innovative chat service that allows
people looking for legal information and self-help resources on www.IllinoisLegalAid.org to ask a remotely
located LiveHelp operator for assistance in navigating the website. LiveHelp volunteers will provide direct
person-to-person online help so that people in need of legal assistance can obtain the information they need
to achieve more positive outcomes to their legal problems.

Volunteers can participate from any computer with internet access, making this a flexible volunteer
opportunity for busy law students! You do not need to have any prior legal knowledge or experience, and
you will receive training, supervision, and support from Illinois Legal Aid Online. Volunteers are expected
to take one, two-hour shift per week for six months (50 hours).

The meeting will provide students with basic information regarding the Moot Court Society and the competition which will be held early in the spring semester. The Moot Court Competition is a key opportunity to hone legal writing and oral argument skills, as well as network with alumni and other professionals in the legal community. It’s not too early to begin thinking about potential teammates! A sandwich lunch will be provided by Kaplan PMBR.

NIU Law Ranks Among Best Value Law Schools


NIU COL ranked 13th on prelaw Magazine’s nationwide “List of the 2010 Best Value Law Schools.” NIU is the only school in Illinois to rank on preLaw’s top 60!

Zeke Giorgi Clinic Receives Award


The Zeke Giorgi Legal Clinic was awarded the 2010 Violence Prevention Coalitions (VPC) Partner in Peace Award. The award is given annually by the VPC to one individual and one organization in honor of their dedication, leadership, collaboration, commitment and innovation in violence prevention efforts.

NIU LLSA team at Nationals!

The NIU Law Office of Admissions would like to congratulate the NIU LLSA team (Gladys Santana (2L), Omar Salguero (2L), and Dan Becerra (3L)) and their coach Professor Robert Jones on their recent  performance at the National LLSA Moot Court Competition which was held at Yale Law School. Our NIU LLSA team made it to the quarter finals and was ahead of teams such as a Yale team, both Columbia teams, both Boston College teams, and team from Kent, and both teams from Southwestern. NIU LLSA team ended up with the fifth highest score after brief and oral arguments were added up for the preliminary round.

The Environmental Law Society will hold a movie night on Wednesday, October 13th in Room #150 at 6:00 p.m. We will be watching the documentary Crude (2009) about a lawsuit that 30,000 people of the Amazon Rain Forest brought against Texaco (now Chevron) alleging health problems, including spiking cancer rates, resulting from massive petroleum contamination of the environment where they live. ISBA Holiday Party

The Illinois Student Bar Association-Young Lawyers Division is having its 13th Annual Holiday Party on Friday,  December 3, 2010 from 6–10 p.m. It will be at Cubby Bear Lounge, Wrigleyville, 1059 W. Addison, Chicago, IL. This event raises money for the Children’s Assistance Fund. Law Student tickets are $30 if purchased before November 19th or $40 at the door. Law Library Construction

New draperies will be installed at all of the windows in the Law Library. University carpenters will begin the  project in the library’s north wing this Friday, October 1. They anticipate working Monday – Wednesday, 10/4-10/6, to finish the installation. There will be some noise and disruption but the end result should be well worth it. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

  • THEMIS - Themis will have a table in the Marshall Gallery on Monday, October 4th at 12:00 noon.
  • BARBRI - Join Barbri on Tuesday, October 5th from 10:00–2:00 p.m. in the Marshall Gallery.
  • KAPLAN PMBR - Kaplan PMBR will have a table on THURSDAY, October 7th, from 11:00–2:00 p.m. in the Marshall Gallery.
  • WESTLAW - Westlaw will sponsor a Table in the Marshall Gallery on Wednesday, October 6th from 11:30 – 1:00.

SBA Presidents Meeting


The SBA will be hosting a “Presidents Meeting” in the Faculty Conference Room on Wednesday, October 6th at 12:00 noon. The purpose of this meeting is to provide an open forum where organization leaders can learn how to properly secure SBA funding, obtain information on hosting events, and ask questions or bring up suggestions about the general operations of student groups and organizations. We hope that all NIU COL organization leaders are able to attend, but if for some reason you are not able to make it, we ask that you send someone in your absence. The meeting should last about 30 minutes. If you have any questions, please

Federalist Society Debate Reminder


The Federalist Society is planning on holding a debate on Wednesday, October 6th 2010 from 3:45 p.m.– 5:00 p.m. between Professor Robert Jones and a guest speaker, attorney Clark Neily, from the Institute of Justice. The debate will take place in the Riley Courtroom with a reception following in the Marshall Gallery.

PILS Membership Meeting

All students are invited to a PILS general membership meeting on Thursday, October 7th at 12:00 noon in Room #186 to kick off Fall Raffle ticket sales! We will be discussing the details of the raffle, the specifics on all of the prizes (including a 42" LCD TV and the Apple iPad!), and how you can help sell tickets. Join us in kicking off this year’s raffle and start earning money for the PILS Outreach Assistantship Fund!

Deans' Town Hall Meeting Update

The Fall Deans’ town hall meeting will be held on Thursday, October 14, at 2:30 p.m. in the Marshall Gallery.  Please note the change of location. Dean Rosato will provide an update on the College of Law, and all the deans will be available to answer your questions. SALDF Penny War Meet & Greet Update
