Pro Bono Initiatives and Certification

If you have a pro bono project you are interested in starting, or would like an opportunity to do some pro bono service, please contact Professor Schlam (Director of Pro Bono Initiatives), at lschlam@niu.edu. Also, if you are a 3L seeking to be certified for pro bono service (a minimum of 60 hours) please obtain an application from  Monica Jinks, in Career Opportunities, Room 280, and she will submit it to Professor Schlam to determine if certification is approved.

Semi-Finals and Finals of Moot Court Competition

The Semi-Final Oral Arguments for the Moot Court Competition take place Saturday, February 26, in the Riley Courtroom (Room 170) at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. We welcome back some of our alums who will be participating as judges. Please feel welcome to attend the arguments and congratulate the semi-final teams.

2Ls, please be sure to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled argument so we can ensure smooth transitions between arguments. If you have questions please contact the Moot Court Board at niumootcourt@gmail.com, via the TWEN page, or stop by the Moot Court office.

A reception will be held this Monday, February 28 at noon in the Marshall Gallery to recognize the five External Moot Court teams and coaches for the 2010-2011 academic year. Barbri will be supplying lunch for the reception, and the Moot Court Society Board hopes students from all classes are able to attend.

The Final Moot Court Argument will take place Saturday, March 5 at 10:30 a.m. in the Riley Courtroom.  The presiding bench for the final argument will include Hon. Michael S. Kanne from the 7th Circuit, Hon. John W. Darrah from the Northern District of Illinois, and Hon. Gary S. Feinerman from the Northern District of Illinois. The semi-final and final arguments are a great opportunity for 1Ls to preview moot court arguments prior to their own 1L appellate oral arguments.

Setting Up a Solo Practice luncheon

Ellen Craker (Class of 2009) will be heading a lunchtime talk, "Setting Up a Solo Practice." Ms. Craker set up a solo practice in Madison, Wisconsin right after passing the bar exam. She has come to learn a lot about the realities of solo practice, the good and the bad, and wants to share her experiences with NIU COL students interested in setting up their own practice. The talk will take place on Monday, February 28th at Noon in Room 188. Lunch will be provided. This event is sponsored by Phi Alpha Delta and the Office of Career Opportunities and Development.

Admission & Financial Aid Graduate Assistantship Reminder

The NIU-COL Office of Admission & Financial Aid is seeking two graduate assistants for the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 academic years. Interested applicants must submit a cover letter expressing interest in the opportunity, a resume, and an Application for a Graduate Assistantship, available at www.niu.edu/grad/diversity/assistantship_application.pdf. Applications must be received by our office in
room 151 no later than 4:00 pm on Tuesday, March 1st. 

These opportunities would not be available without the assistance of the Rhoten A. Smith Program. It was established at NIU to help provide graduate assistantships to minorities and women enrolled in graduate programs in which these groups are underrepresented. The program, named in honor of the university's sixth president, represents part of the institution's commitment to increasing access to graduate education.  A Rhoten A. Smith Assistantship typically pays a stipend and provides a full waiver of tuition. Only U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible.

Research Assistant Needed for Prof. Christopher Hines

Application Deadline: March 31, 2011. Assistant Professor Christopher T. Hines seeks applications from interested students from the Class of 2013 to serve as research assistant for a one-year term starting this coming summer. The research assistant will work with Professor Hines on his ongoing scholarly research, which includes such areas of law as contracts, comparative law, international business transactions, financial reform regulation, and the intersection of corporate law with professional ethics. This position may be renewed for an additional one-year term, subject to performance during the initial one-year term.

Interested candidates are strongly encouraged to submit, via email to chines@niu.edu, the following materials: (i) cover letter indicating your interest in the position and relevant qualifications; (ii) copy of a current resume; (iii) copies of two (2) writing samples, one of which addresses matters of law; (iv) copies of official transcripts from the College of Law and your relevant undergraduate institution(s); and (v) three (3) references from both persons in higher education and the profession, to the extent possible. Additionally, certain candidates may be requested to: (vi) submit his/her Spring 2011 official transcript from the College of Law once they become available; and (vii) sit for an interview lasting approximately 30-45 minutes at such time as may be later determined.

NIU Jessup Moot Court Team Excels at Competition

The NIU Jessup Moot Court Team, in its inaugural outing at the Chicago Super Regional Finals, brought home two awards of distinction: Sixth Best Memorial (Brief) out of 48 submitted and, for team member Emily Martin, Fifth Best Oralist out of 96 competitors. First Round of Prize Moot Court Competition Starts This Weekend


First Preliminary Round Oral Arguments in the Prize Moot Court Competition begin this Saturday, February 12! Arguments will be taking place in the Riley Courtroom (Room 170) and the Chessick Courtroom (Room 155) at 9:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. We are excited to kick off this oral argument portion of the competition and welcome back some of our alums who will be participating as judges.

SBA Canned Food Drive


Due to the bad weather last week, the SBA canned food drive has been delayed.  The DCF will begin Monday, February 14, and continue through the week.   Themis has generously donated a lunch of pizza and pop for all CFD participants.

Illinois Appellate Court Visit Update


The Illinois Appellate Court for the Second District has rescheduled their visit and will hear oral arguments here on Tuesday, February 15 at 10:00 AM in the Riley Courtroom.  Arguments are expected to last until approximately 10:45 a.m. and will be followed by a brief Q & A with the students.  A reception will then be held in the Marshall Gallery.  Visit www.niu.edu/law for more information.

PILS Donation day


Help PILS collect donations from area businesses for the 16th Annual PILS Auction! We are organizing a Donation Day and are looking for volunteers on Thursday, February 17 at 3:00pm. We will meet in the Marshall Gallery before breaking out into groups to solicit donations. Please sign up on TWEN under "Volunteer Sign-up Sheets" if you're interested in helping out. This is a great way to begin banking hours for a summer Outreach Assistantship! Also, you can now donate your LexisNexis reward points to PILS!  You may donate points in increments of 250 points to PILS via the Charitable Donations page on Lexis.  This is a quick and easy way to help PILS raise money for it's Outreach Assistantship fund. Statements of Candidacy Final Notice


MAY 2011 GRADUATES:
The Statement of Candidacy for Degree deadline is Thursday, February 17, 2011 and should be submitted to the Office of Budget & Records (SP276).   For your convenience, forms will be distributed in your mailboxes.  If you do not receive one, please come to the Office of Budget & Records and ask for one.   NOTE:  The $75 fee includes 10 commencement announcements.  Extra announcements may be ordered @ $.25 each.  If you want more than 10 announcements, please add the appropriate amount to the $75 payment.  Payment should be submitted by check made out to “Northern Illinois University."

Final Reminder for Employment Verification Forms


If you have not already done so, please turn in your Employment Verification Form to Barbara in 172A by Friday, February 18th.

This is the FINAL DEADLINE.  You will need to fill out the form, whether you are working or not.  This is an ABA requirement and the certification will be collected EACH semester.

Immigration Enforcement: Laws and "Outlaws"


Northern Illinois University College of Law will host Immigration Enforcement: Laws and "Outlaws" on Thursday, March 3, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the NIU College of Law in the Francis X. Riley Courtroom.

This timely symposium on immigration and homeland security law will feature presentations from a distinguished panel of leading experts on a breadth of topics including the Fourteenth Amendment and Birthright Citizenship; media treatment of immigrants; litigation brought by immigrants’ advocates against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE); and state efforts to enforce internal immigration law, with special focus on the controversial Arizona SB1070.

The symposium will feature keynote speaker Lt. Col. Margaret Stock (ret. US Army) from the University of Alaska Anchorage.  It will also include presentations from Professor Gabriel Chin and Dr. Celeste Gonzalez de Bustamante of the University of Arizona, as well as Professor Bridget Kessler, Clinical Teaching Fellow from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.  The event will be moderated by NIU College of Law Professor Guadalupe Luna.

Upcoming SBA Events for Spring 2011


February 16th- 24th, 2011 Law-Ball Basketball league:

Sign-up is now open for the SBA's annual coed Basketball League! This is a fun basketball league sponsored by the SBA, where teams are made up of all NIU law students. All are welcome to play, both women and men, and all skill levels!

Teams will play Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8:00 PM, from February 16 - February 24th. We have refs, scorekeepers, and reserved courts this year. The cost will be $7 per person.

Sign-up sheets are now in the SBA glass case at Swen Parson. Please sign up ASAP, because the league will be starting very soon!!

Monday, February 14 - 18, SBA/Themis Canned food drive:

Bring in a canned food item during the lunch hours on Monday, Feb. 14 and receive free pizza and soda courtesy of Themis. There will also be a drawing for two $25 Starbucks gift cards. The SBA canned food drive will run throughout the week.

NIU Campus Re-Opens 2/4/2011

According to an NIU Official Message, "Northern Illinois University's main campus in DeKalb, and all regional NIU Educational Centers (Hoffman Estates, Rockford, Naperville) will re-open and resume operations Friday, February 4.

Classes will resume at NIU's main campus in DeKalb, at all regional NIU Educational Centers (Hoffman Estates, Rockford, Naperville), and at other off-campus sites on Friday, February 4."

According to an NIU Official Message, "Due to the dangerous frigid temperatures and wind chill advisory issued by the National Weather Service, all classes at Northern Illinois University’s main campus in DeKalb, at all regional NIU Educational Centers (Hoffman Estates, Rockford, Naperville) and at other off-campus sites will be canceled on Thursday, February 3.  NIU’s main campus in DeKalb will be closed Thursday. NIU’s regional centers in Naperville and Hoffman Estates will remain open to serve previously scheduled clients."
