Externship Opportunities with U.S. Bankruptcy Court

Qualified law students are invited to complement their legal studies with a spring semester 2016 or summer 2016 judicial externship with United States Bankruptcy Judge Thomas Lynch. The term for the summer position is expected to run from June 2016 to early-August 2016. The closing date for the spring semester externship position is December 4, 2015 and the closing date for the summer externship position is January 15, 2016.

Position Overview: The U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Western Division hears bankruptcy and related matters brought by individuals, businesses, family farmers and creditors, among others. The court’s Externship Program provides participants with the opportunity to work with a federal bankruptcy judge and his staff at the U.S. Courthouse at Rockford, Illinois. Externs will observe and participate in the work of the court’s staff reviewing legal submissions, conducting legal research, and assisting with the preparation of legal documents, such as orders. Participants will also assist the court’s staff with various office functions, including editing, proofreading, telephone communications, correspondence and scheduling. Externs are encouraged to frequently observe trials and other courtroom proceedings, attend pretrial settlement and mediation conferences and will be afforded opportunities to participate in the court’s various outreach programs with the bar and community. Judge Lynch also encourages staff and extern interaction with other law clerks posted in Rockford and Chicago.

Minimum Qualifications: To qualify for the position of extern to a federal bankruptcy judge, the applicant must be currently enrolled in a law school accredited by the American Bar Association and have successfully completed her/his first year law school program. In reviewing applications, we look for candidates who demonstrate noteworthy academic accomplishment and qualities of integrity, scholarship, commitment to service, intellectual curiosity, work ethic and congeniality. A healthy sense of humor is always a plus.
