1L Closing Argument Competition Finals This Saturday

The 1L Closing Argument Competition takes place this Saturday, January 30th at 3:00 p.m. at the law school. Your attendance at the final round is both welcomed and encouraged.

This competition is intended to give first-year law students their first opportunity to present an argument in a courtroom. They are given a short fact pattern and jury instruction, and are asked to make a 5-6 minute closing argument, applying law to fact. It is designed not to require extensive preparation. The entire competition takes place Saturday, with two preliminary rounds, semi-finals and finals. They argue the same side of the case throughout the competition. Two champions are crowned, one for the prosecution and one for the defense.

26 students have entered this year. Their participation helps them prepare for oral arguments ahead in legal writing. Past champions have gone on to excel in later trial advocacy and moot court competitions. Come and see NIU Law in action!
