Course Requirements, Restrictions and Procedures

As 1Ls and 2Ls begin to plan for the summer and next year, here are some key requirements, restrictions and procedures to keep in mind.

1. Hours required to graduate: 90, including all required courses.

2. Course restrictions:
● limit of 2 5 hours of credit toward graduation can come from externships, co - curricular activities, interscholastic competitions, Law Review, directed research and graduate courses in other NIU departments ● limit of 30 hours of credit toward graduation can come fro m skills courses, clinics, externships, co - curricular activities, interscholastic competitions, Law Review, directed research and graduate courses in other NIU departments 4
● at least 55 hours toward graduation must be taken at the College of Law [allows u p to 35 credits on visits or in summer or winter intercession courses at other law schools]
● other course limits applied to 90 hours needed for graduation:
  ○ only 6 hours for non - law graduate courses, except 9 hours for joint JD/MBA and 12 hours for join t JD/MPA
  ○ only 6 hours Directed Research (only 3 per semester)
  ○ only 4 hours for Law Review for members; only 5 hours for Law Review board ○ only 4 hours for co - curricular activities/competitions
  ○ only 6 hours for distance learning (online) courses
● limits per semester:
  ○ maximum of 18 hours for fall and spring semesters (15 hours if below 2.4 cumulative GPA)
  ○ maximum of 6 hours for summer session, with occasional exception for up to 3 more hours of externships, directed research projects or courses at other ABA accredited law schools if offered in second half of summer

3. Procedural requirements:
● approval of transfer of credits from other NIU departments and joint degree programs: file Petition for Special Consideration with Dean Falkoff
● approval of visits and transfer of credits from other ABA - accredited law schools: file Petition for Special Consideration with Dean Coles
● approval of Directed Research projects: file registration form with Dean Falkoff
● approval of Law Review and co - curricular credits: contact faculty advisors
● approval of course schedules with fewer than 12 credits per semester (except in summer): file Petition for Special Consideration with Dean Coles
● approval of course schedules with more than 15 hours per semester: file Petition for Special Consideration with Dean Coles (if, but only if, cumulative GPA is below 2.4)
