Federal Public Defender Office Externship - Applications Due Monday, 5/1

Available for the 2017 - 2018 academic year in Rockford, Illinois. This is a full-year externship. It will require a twelve hour-per-week field placement commitment (eight hours on-site and four hours off-site) and a one hour per week seminar for four hours of pass/fail credit each semester. This externship does not require a 711 license. The extern will be supervised on-site by Federal Public Defender Paul Gaziano. You will research and write memoranda, motions and briefs for pre-trial and post-conviction issues and sentencing hearings. In addition, you will attend and observe various court proceedings. Professor Paul Cain will be the faculty supervisor with whom you will meet on a regular basis to discuss your experience. After reviewing the documents, Professor Cain will screen the applicants for the final three candidates and will then submit the names and contact information of the final three candidates to Federal Public Defender Gaziano. His office will contact you to arrange for an interview and his office will make the final selection.
